A research team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has received $825,000 from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Led by professor Jenny Ting, the team plans on exploring the causes of the disease as well as ways of stopping it.
UNC also is developing a curriculum in physical therapy specific to multiple sclerosis, it said in a statement.
MS affects between 300,000 and 400,000 people in the United States. UNC says about 10,000 families in North Carolina are affected by the neurological disease, which can lead to blindness and paralysis.
Reported in the Triangle Business Journal, Wednesday, April 16, 2008.
