It's that time of year again: Bike MS! Over the next three weekends Bike MS will be all over the the Carolinas with the Historic New Bern Ride, Tour to Tanglewood and Breakaway to the Beach. Traditionally, Bike MS raises more than $2.5 million for the Society in North and South Carolina by people that want to do something about MS NOW. Additionally during this time, the Society, cyclists and community leaders work together to ensure that roads are safe and accessible.
Both the NC and SC Departments of Transportation are actively committed to improving bicycle and pedestrian accommodations and safety. The NC Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation (DBPT) is the oldest program of its kind in the nation. DBPT seeks to integrate bicycle and pedestrian safety, mobility and accessibility into the overall transportation program through engineering, planning, education and training. Likewise, South Carolina's Bike and Pedestrian Program launched in 2002 works to achieve those same goals, resulting in such projects as biking and walking lanes on busy streets and bridges.
Safe and accessible roads improve mobility and living standards for everyone by increasing freedom of movement and by offering a choice of valid transportation options. Together, this is how we work to make Bike MS safe in the Carolinas. Plus, with safety accounted for riders can simply focus on having fun!
